Later the gun was modified and designated the Model 71/84. During the wars of 1864-66 as well as 1870-71 the production of military rifles was increasingly important, and another new facility was completed prior to 1871 when Sauer was called upon to help Mauser produce the Modell 71 military rifle. By 1858 two hundred people were employed by Sauer. Because of this, a new facility was begun in 1837 and completed a year later. Most modern SIG Sauer pistols feature controls in almost the same place as on the Sauer 38H.In 1811 Sauer became the first company ever to produce firearms for the German military. Almost all modern pistols manufactured by SIG Sauer today feature a decocking lever, including the highly successful SIG P226 family. Another advanced feature for its time was the magazine safety, a device that deactivates the trigger when the magazine is removed from the pistol. A small pin protruded at the rear of the slide as a loaded chamber indicator. A hollow space on the trigger indicated if the concealed hammer was cocked if completely exposed, the hammer was lowered. The cocking feature was necessary due to the shrouded hammer and the decocking mechanism was a safety feature. The hammer on the Sauer 38H could be lowered for safe carry at any time. A revolutionary feature was the first use of a lever that either cocked or decocked the hammer safely. Other features included a traditional double action trigger, single-column magazine and an action spring surrounding a fixed barrel.
